How the #TakeInTucker Scavenger Hunt works

Explore all the cool sites and natural beauty of Tucker County, West Virginia, while participating in the Take In Tucker Scavenger Hunt! Plus, be entered to win a $250 gift card at the same time.

Just follow these five easy steps to play.

STEP 1: Grab a Tucker County passport at one of these locations:

  • Tucker County Visitor Center (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week)
  • Vacation Rental offices
  • Canaan Valley Resort State Park
  • Blackwater Falls State Park
  • Parsons City Hall

STEP 2: Follow the scenic driving loop to explore five cool locations across Tucker County on West Virginia’s famous country roads.

STEP 3: Bring your Tucker County passport to collect five different “Tucker Tree” stickers for your passport. Each location will have an easily identifiable waterproof plastic box containing a roll of stickers that are to be affixed to the passport at each stop. Don’t see any stickers? No problem! Just write the code word for the location on your entry card.

STEP 4: Be sure to share photos of your favorite stops on social media using the hashtag #TakeInTucker.

STEP 5: Once your passport is full, turn it in or mail it to the Tucker County Convention and Visitor Bureau to qualify for the $250 gift card drawing on October 31, 2023. Addresses can be found below.

STOP DETAILS AND DRIVING DIRECTIONS: 

STOP 1 – Mount Porte Crayon Overlook, Canaan Valley State Park 

Take in West Virginia’s sixth tallest mountain and one of the least explored areas in the Appalachian Mountains.

Directions: The 2023 Take in Tucker Scavenger Hunt begins in Canaan Valley on Route 32. Approximately ¾ of a mile south of the Canaan Valley State Park entrance is a pull-off on the left hand side of the road (across from Back Hollow Road).

The passport box with stickers and the code word are found behind the Mount Porte Crayon kiosk. 

STOP 2 – A-Frame Road Observation Deck, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge

The sights from the northern end of Canaan Valley are Tucker County’s best kept secret — until now.

Directions: From Davis, WV, take US 48 east for six miles.  Take a right onto A-Frame Road. Go approximately 4.5 miles toward the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Stay on the main gravel road, even when other roads appear on your right or left. This is a suitable gravel road with little signage until reaching the CVNWR observation deck and signage.  

The passport box is located along the deck.

STOP 3 – Buxton and Landstreet Historic Block, Coketon, West Virginia

Discover the unique history and art tucked away in Coketon, WV. 

Return to Davis on US 48 west and take a right onto Route 32 north to Thomas, WV. Drive 1.8 miles and take a sharp left onto Douglas Road, continue 0.6 miles. You will arrive at the Buxton and Landstreet Historic Building and Gallery. Parking is on the left side of the building.   

The passport box is found within the driveway circle and historic sign, attached to an enormous evergreen tree. 

STOP 4 – U.S. Forest Service, Tucker County Campus, Parsons, West Virginia

Explore the birthplace of forestry management in the Monongahela National Forest.

Return 0.6 miles to Route 32 and turn left, heading north on Route 32. Go 0.5 miles and take another left onto Route 219 south to Parsons, WV. Drive 13 miles and then turn left onto Nursery Bottom Road. Continue 0.2 miles and you will see a kiosk for the Nursery Bottom and bench on your left. 

The passport box is located behind the kiosk.

STOP 5 – Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail, Hendricks, West Virginia 

Make your way to the lower Blackwater Canyon and Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail on your final stop.

Return to Route 32, take a right and drive 1.1 miles on Route 32 north. Take another right onto WV-72, driving 1.4 miles and taking another right onto 2nd Street where you will see a parking lot and the Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail Kiosk.  

The passport box is located within the kiosk.
