Get in My Belly
Food is always on the mind, so we may as well start with our favorite topic. Pizza is no stranger to Tucker County and with that we welcome two new locations. In Canaan Valley, Mama Mias opened their doors this past winter in the Blackwater Center shopping plaza. Mama Mia’s is a full-service, sit-down restaurant with a variety of pasta dishes, specialty pizzas and large calzones the size of a baby.
Thomas, West Virginia is known for its art scene and eclectic shops, but recently, a variety of food options has taken on new meaning. Riverfront Wood Fired Pizza is the latest addition to Front Street. Deliciously flavored pizza is complimented by an outstanding array of fresh salads and local beers on tap.
Might as well stick to the consumables while we are at it. Tucker County’s first distillery and winery opened recently. New Heritage Distilling unlocked their doors in Davis, West Virginia next to Blackwater Bikes. Tours are always available by Vic Bob, the enthusiastic owner and creator of fine apple brandies.
Over the years we are always being asked for wineries. Now that request can be filled with the start of Corks Turkey Knob Wines in Hambleton, West Virginia. Sourced from local and imported ingredients, there is something for everyone. If you are in Hambleton, Parsons, WV is next door and home to MeeShell’s Resale Shop and Creations Arts and Crafts. An excellent stop for those antiquing or looking to create their very own designs using West Virginia product.
For Mind and Body
Tucker County is home to an incredibly strong art scene diverse in character. Two ends of the spectrum showed up in 2021 with tradition glass blowing and contemporary designs.
Gradient Project is the brainchild of Thomas, WV residents who wanted to put a twist into the art gallery experience. Doors open at 6pm and close at 11pm., with adult beverages available. The best way to describe the gallery is contemporary afterhours. For those looking to more of a hands-on experience, Glass by Scott in Davis, WV offers glass blowing demonstrations and retail sales all under one roof.
Three new events were added in 2021 and will make their return in 2022. Canaan Valley Resort is back with their Mountain Side Music Series beginning May 27th and lasting through Labor Day Weekend. This is a FREE concert series located at the ski area. Here, Quenchers Grill and Pub is open and scenic chair lift rides run into the evening.
The other events are sporty ones. At the end of May is the 2nd Parsons VFD Cheat River Triathlon, which is held in Parsons, West Virginia. Before summer comes to a close the Moonlight on the Falls Marathon returns at the end of August to Blackwater Falls State Park.
