Events and Fun for The Fourth of July

For 66 years the Thomas Volunteer Fire Department has been perfecting the art of producing one of West Virginia’s finest July 4th firework shows.  And the 2023 Mountaineers Days July 4th Celebration will be no different!

The first thing you need to know, is that annual fireworks display is always held on a Saturday and typically the weekend before Independence Day.  This year’s event is on Saturday, July 1st with fireworks beginning just after dark.

Live music is an all-day affair from 11:00 am to 7:30 p.m. on Front Street in Thomas, WV.  Enjoy several local acts as well as country music headliner, Austin Snell.  Over the years events have been added such as a 5K Run and additional food vendors along the north-fork of the Blackwater River.  Join in the fun with Mountaineer Days this year.

The 2023 July Fourth Celebrations begin Friday June 30th and continues through Sunday, July 2nd at Canaan Valley Resort with two amazing free concerts.  Friday night begins with the Mountain Side Music Series and local musicians, The Cooley Gang.

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra makes their annual appearance on the grassy slopes of Canaan Valley Ski Resort on Sunday, July 2nd.  You are more than welcome to bring a lawn chair and cooler full of beverages while enjoying the show.  Please no pop-up tents or “party umbrellas” so that everyone has a good view of the orchestra.  The gates open at 2 p.m. with the concert beginning at 3:00 p.m. and lasting until 5:00 p.m.

KITES Big and small July 1st and 2nd fly during Windfest at Canaan Valley Resort.  Construct your own to fly in several kite building workshops and watch the professionals perform with stunt kites.  Take in the views on a scenic chairlift ride up Weiss Knob from the Canaan Valley Resort Ski Area.  Each evening brings the day to a close with a horse drawn wagon ride and marshmallow roast.

RIVER DAYS   Nothing says July 4th better than spending a day floating down the Cheat River by tube, kayak, or canoe.

HORSEBACK Another favorite pastime that an adventure for all ages and abilities is going for a guided horseback ride in Canaan Valley.  Mountain Trail Rides and Saddles and Smiles both offer daily tours.
