HOW THE #GETTUCKERED SCAVENGER HUNT WORKS

Explore all the cool sites and natural beauty of Tucker County, West Virginia, while participating in the Get Tuckered Scavenger Hunt! Plus, be entered to win a $500 gift card at the same time.

Just follow these five easy steps to play.

STEP 1

Grab a Tucker County passport at one of these locations:

  • Tucker County Visitor Center (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week)
  • Local Lodging Facilities
  • Canaan Valley Resort State Park Main Lodge
  • Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
  • Blackwater Falls State Park Main Lodge
  • Parsons City Hall

STEP 2:

Follow the scenic driving loop to explore five cool locations across Tucker County on West Virginia’s famous country roads.

STEP 3:

Bring your Tucker County passport to collect five unique code words. Each location will feature a clearly marked box with a secret code word on the outside. Write down the code word from each location on your entry card.

STEP 4:

Be sure to share photos of your favorite stops on social media using the hashtag #GetTuckered.

STEP 5:

Once your passport is full, turn it in or mail it to the Tucker County Convention and Visitors Bureau by October 31, 2025, to qualify for the $500 gift card drawing, which will occur shortly after the deadline. Addresses can be found below.


STOP DETAILS AND DRIVING DIRECTIONS: 

Stop 1: Almost Heaven Swing

Almost Heaven swings are located at spectacular overlooks and scenic landscapes throughout the state. Each location includes a handmade wooden swing, creating an irresistible photo opportunity!

Directions: Take Route 32 south toward Canaan Valley Resort State Park. Make a right turn into the resort and follow the main road to the four-way intersection. Proceed straight through the intersection. The Balsam Fir Overlook Trailhead and parking lot are located on the left. The swing sits at the far right corner of the parking lot.

The scavenger hunt box is located on the left side of the parking area on the trailhead kiosk.

Stop 2: National Youth Science Academy Trailhead Kiosk

New kiosks and trail signage have been installed at the National Youth Science Academy. The Camp 70 Trail System, spanning 30 miles around Davis, features popular spots such as Moon Rocks.

Directions: Return to Route 32 and head north toward Davis. Continue through the town of Davis and make a right turn onto Route 48/93. Turn right onto Riverstone Road toward the National Youth Science Academy. The kiosk is on the back side of the parking lot, opposite the building.

The scavenger hunt box is located on the trailhead kiosk.

Stop 3: Thomas City Park

Thomas City Park offers over five miles of trails, an ADA accessible fishing platform and a small boat launch for public use.

Directions: Return to Route 48/93 and turn left onto the highway toward Davis. At the stop sign, turn right onto Route 32 toward Thomas. Continue through Thomas and make a left onto Route 219 south toward Parsons. Immediately after the bridge, turn right into Thomas City Park. Follow the dirt road to the park kiosk and pavilion.

The scavenger hunt box is located on the trailhead kiosk before the pavilion.

Stop 4: Centennial Park Overlook

The roadside overlook provides breathtaking views from the top of Backbone Mountain to the farmlands below.

Directions: Continue onto Route 219 south toward Parsons. After passing the windmills, look for a stunning overlook on your right. Centennial Park is at the far end of the overlook area.

The scavenger hunt box is located on the bench at the overlook.

Stop 5: Butternut Tree

Standing 77 feet tall with a 16-foot diameter and a circumference of 192 inches, this is the largest recorded Butternut Tree in West Virginia, located in the town of Parsons.

Directions: Travel on Route 219 south through Parsons. At the only stoplight in the county, turn left to stay on Route 219 south. Then, turn left onto Davis Street. The tree is located at the end of the road on the left.
