Davis

Located on the rim of the Monongahela National Forest, Davis is a gateway to unbound outdoor adventure with trails and natural beauty right at your fingertips.

Incorporated in 1880 and named after industrialist and U.S. Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, the town quickly became known as “Stump Town.” This nickname surfaced after Robert Eastham cleared the trees but left behind stumps from the region’s spruce and hardwood forests, reportedly so many that you could walk across town stepping only on them.

Today, Davis draws in cyclists, offering access to nearly 75% of the county’s singletrack. Since the 1980s, the town has been a hub for races and riders, solidifying its place as a premier destination for biking enthusiasts.

The annual Leaf Peeper’s Festival, held on the last full weekend of September in Davis, celebrates the beauty of autumn with seasonal activities and events.

The town offers proximity to Blackwater Falls State Park and three nearby ski resorts, making it an all-season outdoor destination. Take in the stunning Blackwater Falls, one of West Virginia’s most powerful cascades, or admire the unparalleled views of the Blackwater Canyon from Lindy Point. Test your climbing skills at Tucker Boulder Park, or explore the trails on two wheels after a stop at Blackwater Bikes for rentals or a tune-up.

During winter, Davis transforms into a snow lover’s paradise. Sled down the quarter-mile Sled Hill at Blackwater Falls State Park or try fat biking, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing for a new way to explore.

When it’s time to unwind, Davis doesn’t disappoint. Savor local cuisine, craft beer and distilled apple brandy at its mountain eateries and breweries. Stroll along the main street to discover unique shops featuring everything from artwork to outdoor gear.
